Matthew Thomas Krol, 63, was charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon or inflicting bodily injury, in addition to other charges. Krol, the self-professed executive officer of the Genesee County Volunteer Militia, was arrested in Michigan and is set to make his first court appearance Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement. Krol was the most recent arrest in the DOJ’s hunt to locate individuals allegedly involved with the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021....

George Floyd was killed in May 2020 when Derek Chauvin—a former Minneapolis police officer—pinned Floyd’s neck with his knee for more than nine minutes while the 46-year-old Black man repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. His death sparked global protests and debates about racial injustice and police brutality. And now, a recent biography of Floyd is among the list of nominees for the National Book Award. Thomas Lane, 37, is charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter. State prosecutors earlier this month rejected a motion filed in July to dismiss the charges against him. But in a new filing on Monday, Lane’s attorney Earl Gray wrote that the state’s response to his motion was a “narrative fiction” and his client “did nothing wrong.” Rather, Gray alleges that Floyd contributed to his own death by taking a lethal dose of fentanyl during his arrest....

Courteney Ross, Floyd’s girlfriend for the past three years, told The Star Tribune she is “heartbroken” by the riots that occurred Wednesday. “Waking up this morning to see Minneapolis on fire would be something that would devastate Floyd. He loved the city. He came here [from Houston] and stayed here for the people and the opportunities. … Floyd was a gentle giant. The medical examiner’s report contradicts the conclusions of a private autopsy ordered by Floyd’s family which declared he died of “asphyxiation,” a lack of oxygen. While the Floyd family hasn’t yet released a full report on their autopsy findings and are reportedly investigating further details that might’ve contributed to his death, their public comments so far haven’t mentioned any fentanyl or meth use. According to a CBS46 report, enraged parent Adryan McCauley saw the apparently unequal child treatment when he checked in on his two-year-old child using the Kids ‘R’ Kids Roswell video live stream. He claimed that, according to the video, staffers fed the white children in their care before getting to the Black children. He noted that his own son was among the Black kids forced to wait for their meal....

Eric Lee Brown, 35, pleaded guilty in July to one count related to the planned operation and faced a maximum of five years in prison. He had previously been charged with three separate federal offenses in January before he began cooperating with prosecutors. On Tuesday, the federal police tweeted an alert in German, Russian and Ukrainian. “At Berlin Central Station, some people are behaving conspicuously in connection with the distribution of accommodations to displaced persons from Ukraine,” the post said. “Please contact the police immediately if you are offered money for accommodation or observe people doing this.” Police described the disturbing pattern to the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel on Wednesday.
