It’s clear the fan made a conscious decision to go into the water. He didn’t just lose track of where he was. He wanted that home run ball and no one was going to deny him.
There’s no ladder where the fan fell in, so he had to swim a while in order to get to safety. He was thrown a life preserver to help with his efforts.
