The Jets quarterback said that while he may be the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick now, he thinks it’s only a matter of time before he is a starter again.

Week 4 picks: Straight up | Against the spread

“It’s going to come,” Smith told Bleacher Report. “I’m way too talented.”

The 25-year-old spent last season as the backup to Fitzpatrick after starting his first two seasons in the NFL and leading the Jets to the playoffs as a rookie. And if Fitzpatrick struggles like he did last week — he threw six interceptions in a loss to the Chiefs — we may see Smith sooner than later. “But I’ve been a starter,” Smith said. “I’ve been playing. I hate to continue to throw that around. It’s not like I’m throwing my weight around. But I just believe that I can do a lot of things in this league. I’ve done it.”

Smith’s two years as a starter produced less-than-stellar results statistically, as he threw for 25 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. Despite his uneven results, Smith is sure he can play consistently as a quarterback in the NFL.

Smith will be a free agent next year regardless of whatever happens this season, so even if he doesn’t start for the Jets, he’ll have a chance to convince other teams he can play.
