Final Fantasy VII’s main antagonist is arriving as a DLC right before Christmas, players can unlock him early if they defeat a brand new game mode and there are new Mii Fighter costumes for players to collect.
However, one of the announced Mii Fighter costumes has the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community split.
Geno, one of the characters from the cult classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, was given its own Mii Fighter costume, letting the Gunner class of the fighter don its classic hat and cape.
The fans seem to be split into two groups, generally speaking: those who are happy or indifferent about this development, and those who are angry or disappointed.
Whenever a Mii Fighter gets a costume based on a character, it’s safe to say that the character will not be joining the proper Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, which is also the case for characters who are featured as assist trophies. With the reveal of the Geno Mii Fighter costume, hopes of the character joining the fight have seemingly been dashed.
“F’s in the chat for my most wanted character in Smash (aside from Ridley),” one Twitter user wrote. “RIP to my boy Geno.”
“And so Geno, a C-list side character continues to be nothing more than a mii fighter costume, as he should be,” another Twitter user wrote.
Geno began trending on Twitter following the Sephiroth Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stream, as the platform became flooded with players on both sides of the fight (as shown above) giving their takes on the news. Oh, and of course there were a ton of memes.
But the crème de la crème of the Geno-not-being-added-to-Super-Smash-Bros.-Ultimate memes can be found over in the game’s own subreddit.
Whether it’s Geno being inserted into a classic scene from Final Fantasy VII, or having the Super Mario RPG character join other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hopefuls in purgatory, or perfectly showing how the Smash Community reacted to seeing the Geno Mii Fighter costume, the memes over on Reddit are undefeated.
The Geno costume and other new Mii Fighter costumes will become available to purchase on December 22.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
