Fabian is a gamer from New Jersey and the picture of his study has delighted internet users with its stunning arrangement of houseplants.
Millennials and houseplants are perhaps one of the greatest modern partnerships. Statistics show that 66 percent of Americans own at least one houseplant, and 7 in 10 millennials would refer to themselves as a “plant parent.”
A simple way to create a healthier space, house plants can help to purify the air and maybe even to boost your mood.
Social media plays a big part in our plant obsession too, with millions of posts on Instagram at #houseplants and an entire subreddit dedicated to sharing and chatting about all things plants r/houseplants.
As many young adults are struggling to purchase their own homes and delaying getting married or having children, plants seem to fill a gap with the human need to nurture. Looking after a plant is caring for a living thing—but without making a huge commitment or having to worry too much about staying out late or going on vacation.
This plant fan has mixed one well-loved pastime with another. Also a fan of gaming, he shared his study set up, complete with a gaming computer, sleek desk, and all the required accessories on Reddit’s r/battlestations—a space for people to share their gaming set up.
Surrounded by house plants on shelves, hanging from the ceiling and in custom-built cabinets, the picture drew hundreds of replies.
One commenter said: “Air must be mad crispy in there,” while another Redditor wrote: “…can I be you, please? I love this.”
Two Passions
Fabian told Newsweek: “Gaming has been a huge part of my life ever since I can remember. I am the youngest of four so I would always watch my brothers play video games while I spectated on the side. Growing up we always managed to obtain the latest consoles on the market. It wasn’t until college that I built my PC and have been a PC gamer ever since.”
Alongside his passion for gaming, Fabian also has a real love for nature: “Plants are something I always admired,” he said: “I love doing outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring nature.
“I didn’t get into plants until COVID-19 hit. We were all stuck inside and I needed something to keep busy. That’s when I decided to give houseplants a try, even though I thought I was going to end up killing the plants.”
But Fabian quickly found his green fingers and after starting with just three plants, he has now accumulated a total of 68 just around his gaming station.
Including philodendrons, monsteras, syngoniums, hoyas, and many more, the arrangement has continued to impress internet users even three years after it was first shared on Reddit.
“Really good,” said one reply on Reddit, but viewers also had some questions: “How is the humidity?” asked one commenter.
Others asked about the humidity in the space and if the plants were causing any issues alongside the tech. But this is something that Fabian has considered carefully.
“It was my number one concern when my collection of plants began getting bigger and I realized that some plants needed much higher humidity,” said Fabian: “Before buying a humidifier, I researched how it would affect my tech and gadgets but unfortunately, I couldn’t find much information. I decided to risk it and go forward with my purchase.”
Now a little over two years since he first created the set up, Fabian says everything still works perfectly fine.
“I try to clean my PC every few months to make sure there is no rusting occurring or any damage,” he explained.
“Took me a few months but I managed to achieve something that I was satisfied with,” said the gamer. “It’s still evolving to this day and I’m not sure if I will ever have a final product. My close friends all saw the admiration I had for this hobby so they encouraged me to start an Instagram account to share this wonderful green journey.”
Fabian later set up his Instagram account @guilty_green where he continues to share his plant journey with other nature fans online.
