Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have for months touted an IRS funding increase that would allow the tax agency to better enforce collection from wealthy Americans who hide an estimated $1 trillion each year.

Saturday morning Fox News segment warned Americans will be “targeted based on their political views” in response to a Treasury Department proposal for IRS expansion. Lashinsky methodically dismantled Asman’s repeated claim the IRS will begin “prowling” into people’s bank accounts. Lashinsky’s rebuke culminated with the incredulous Fox News host asking: “Doesn’t that frighten you?”

“David [Asman], I’m as much of a civil libertarian as you and [former Trump economic adviser] Steve Moore are,” said Lashinsky, “and you two are either purposely, or maybe you don’t know, you’re leaving out a key detail which is the fact-check proposal for this thing—and that’s all that is—says that they want to look at aggregate outflows and inflows, so to provide a little more information to the IRS that says ‘David Asman had way more of an outflow last year than he did five years ago, do we want to further than that?’”

“And as you already know, the IRS already has the power to look further when it think there is a problem,” Lashinsky said.

“But this would be unlimited Adam, unlimited ability without any court order or anything. Doesn’t that frighten you at all?” Asman replied, appearing visibly frustrated at Lashinsky’s fact-checking rebuttal.

“Not necessarily on the aggregate data. Look, lets fight about this. But nobody is suggesting unlimited prowling into my bank account, which is what you’re speculating,” Lashinsky added.

Asman characterized Biden’s proposed funding increase for IRS enforcement as “big brother government,” which liberals used to be scared of during the ’50s and ’60s. He expressed concern that a recent fact-check inquiry might reveal [taxpayers’] political preferences.

The IRS estimates that a $440 billion annual tax gap would be filled in by increasing its ability to collect from wealthy Americans and businesses that illegally hide their money off-shore. Biden’s proposal is to increase funding by $80 billion to the IRS over a decade to boost collection.

“Adam is very forgiving of the IRS…Have you read this over, Adam. I mean, Danielle [DiMartino Booth], let me switch to you,” Asman said, redirecting the conversation to another member of the panel.

Steve Moore, a former Trump economic adviser who also appeared on the TV segment Saturday, agreed with Asman’s claim that the IRS may any added power to “intimidate” Americans.

“As a civil libertarian and someone who believes in financial privacy, I find it deeply troubling,” Moore said, saying the best system to increase enforcement is to implement a “very simple flat tax” system with no deductions or sheltering. “Let’s fix the tax system, not expand the IRS.”
