George, 47, of Newark, was convicted in September 2013 on four counts of wire fraud as he, a first-round draft choice of the Nets in 1990, used his celebrity status from 2005-11 to raise more than $2 million, purportedly for real-estate development but used to repay early investors as well as pay for a birthday party for his daughter and other expenses he faced.

George may be best remembered at UConn for catching a full-court inbounds pass and making a buzzer-beating shot that helped the No. 1-seeded Huskies beat Clemson in the East Regional semifinals of the 1990 NCAA Tournament. UConn lost to Duke in the regional final.

In addition to the nine-year sentence, U.S. District Judge Mary Cooper ordered George to serve three years of supervised release and make $2.55 million of restitution
