A warrant was issued seeking William Moses “Willie” Hooker Jr.’s arrest after Wright was shot multiple times in a domestic dispute in Concord.
Hooker was arrested in Graham, North Carolina, some 90 miles northeast of where the shooting occurred and subsequently was charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was released on $150,000 bond and his first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
Wright was in stable condition Tuesday, recovering at an area hospital, according to the Concord (N.C.) Police Department.
Police say they responded at 12:40 p.m ET Monday to a “report of gun shots" and officers arrived on the scene to find Wright with multiple wounds. He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he underwent emergency surgery.
His wounds were not considered life-threatening, police officials told The Charlotte Observer.
Witnesses told Concord Police investigators that Wright “got into a verbal altercation” with Hooker, who shares a daughter with Wright’s girlfriend.
“This altercation began when the ‘ex’ showed up to drop off his daughter. An argument ensued and shots were fired,” police said in their release.
In his most successful season, he started seven games down the stretch in 2003, taking over for injured Kyle Boller and leading the Ravens to a 5-2 mark and playoff berth (they lost to the Titans in the AFC wild card game) as he passed for 1,199 yards and career-best nine touchdowns for the season.
A torn labrum requiring surgery cost him his 2004 season. He went 2-5 as a starter to begin 2005 and was replaced by Boller. Wright completed 164 of 266 passes for a career-best 1,582 yards and six touchdowns with nine interceptions that season.
He was the Giants’ No. 3 QB on their Super Bowl-winning team following the 2007 regular season but appeared in only three games. He didn’t play in a regular-season NFL game after that season.
