“After four years of reckless Trumpian chaos and division, we believe it is time for a new president and ask that you join us,” the two wrote.

“Joe Biden is not a perfect man, but he is a man of humble decency,” they added. “America needs a restored sense of national unity, basic civility and true character in our president.”

Both Djou and Edwards were elected to Congress as Republicans.

Djou represented Hawaii’s 1st congressional district in 2010 to 2011 as the first Thai American of any party and the first Chinese American Republican to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Edwards represented Oklahoma’s 5th congressional district for 16 years, from 1977 to 1993, after being reelected seven times.

The two former congressmen said they “should be among Donald Trump’s biggest supporters,” citing their Republican ties, but argue that Trump “is no Republican.”

“He is simply an ill-formed man who lacks basic self-control and shows no semblance of inner character,” the Roll Call op-ed read.

Djou and Edwards criticized Trump’s disparaging comments on veterans, his close relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un, the withdrawal of the U.S. from NATO and the separation of immigrant children from their families at the border.

The two quoted former president George W. Bush about immigration as “a blessing and a strength,” saying they stand with Bush’s conservative values rather than Trump’s, which “bears a much closer relationship to the autocrats in Turkey or Russia or China than the American Statue of Liberty.”

The congressmen said despite disagreements between party lines, there is a greater shared interest among Americans but that the president “repeatedly seeks to divide Americans against Americans—usually by late-night tweet—for his personal gain.”

Newsweek reached out to the Trump campaign for comment but did not hear back before publication.

A growing number of former Republican officials have endorsed Biden ahead of Election Day.

In August, hours before the start of the Republican National Convention, 27 former GOP lawmakers, including Djou, said they would back Biden over Trump in the upcoming presidential election.

“These former members of Congress cited Trump’s corruption, destruction of democracy, blatant disregard for moral decency and urgent need to get the country back on course as a reason why they support Biden,” Biden’s campaign said in a statement.
