Phillips played 18 seasons in the big leagues and is probably best known for his early days with the Oakland A’s. He was a member of the 1989 world champion team.
The Atlanta-born Phillips was primarily a second baseman but also played short, third and the corner outfield positions — with appearances elsewhere. In 1988, Phillips played, at some point, at every position on the field beyond pitcher and catcher, including the designated hitter spot in the order.
Although just a .266 career hitter, Phillips’ lifetime on-base percentage was a strong .374. Usually hitting near the top of the order, Phillips also had 177 career stolen bases.
