The New York Times touted sales of the hot punk band Offspring’s album ““Smash,’’ at ““100 million worldwide since April.’’ Quite a feat, since Michael Jackson has sold only 92 million copies of all his albums combined. People at the band’s label, Epitaph, gave the Times a phony figure because they ““thought it was funny.’’ The Times plans to look into it.
