In Di’s Footsteps

Maybe Camilla Parker Bowles should just forget trying to dress for success. Parker Bowles came to New York last week–apparently at Prince Charles’s considerable expense–to smooth her way with the Yanks while sprucing up her notoriously frumpy image. Lunch with designer Oscar de la Renta and socialite Brooke Astor certainly did the trick–the “Rottweiler,” as Diana called her rival, looked smashing. The problem was, she also looked a lot like Diana, from the pastel suit to the square handbag down to the nearly identical shoes. How will Camilla win over Charles’s subjects if she insists on going toe to toe with his ex-wife?

Andre and Steffi in Love

Even if Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf are both tennis gods, let’s not resort to silly cliches about love matches or mixed doubles. Though Agassi confirmed the long-rumored relationship last week, isn’t it enough to see them look so happy? Of course, people do get carried away. Upon hearing about the new couple, Boris Becker told the German newspaper Bild: “I hope Steffi will soon be pregnant.” Talk about high-powered tennis parents.

Standing Up for George

Country gentleman Alan Jackson isn’t known for his protest songs. But at the Country Music Association Awards, he brought the Grand Ole Opry to its feet when he stopped performing his own hit in mid-yee-ha to break into George Jones’s song “Choices.” Jones had decided to boycott the awards after officials asked the living legend to cut his tune to 90 seconds (wouldn’t want to trim ‘N Sync’s song, would we?). Thanks to Jackson, the 68-year-old icon still won big. “I needed a tissue I was so touched,” said Jones, who watched from home. “It was the greatest honor ever bestowed on me.” Translation: take your trophy and shove it.
